Description
Bison were once abundant throughout North America, but their numbers declined sharply in the 19th century due to overhunting and habitat loss. By the late 1800s, fewer than 1,000 bison remained in the wild. Yellowstone National Park played a key role in the recovery of the species, as a small population of bison within the park was protected from hunting and allowed to grow.
Today, Yellowstone's bison herd is one of the largest and healthiest in the world, with an estimated population of over 4,000 individuals. The park's bison are wild and roam freely throughout the park, though they are closely monitored by park staff to ensure their safety and well-being.
