Description
Rocky Mountain Big Horn Ram on watch, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are an iconic species of the American West and can be found throughout Colorado's rugged mountain ranges. These impressive animals are known for their large, curved horns, which can weigh up to 30 pounds and are used for defense and mating displays.
One interesting fact about Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in Colorado is that their coat color can vary depending on their location. Sheep living in the southern parts of the state tend to have a lighter, grayish-brown coat, while those in the northern parts of the state have a darker, more reddish-brown coat.
Additionally, male bighorn sheep are typically larger than females and have much larger horns. During mating season, males will engage in fierce head-butting battles to establish dominance and win the right to mate with the females.
Despite being a beloved and iconic species, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep face threats such as habitat loss, disease, and climate change. Conservation efforts are ongoing to help protect these amazing animals for future generations to enjoy.
